I’m trying to free up my Pi 3b which is overkill for a PiHole with Unbound DNS and am looking to try something other than a pi zero. What are your recommendations! A few brands that come to mind are LibreComputer, NanoPi, BananaPi, and OrangePi. Bonus points if it’s possible to set up with POE!
The nanopi R2S looks like a decent option however is uses a broadcom chip. Could that be problematic? https://www.friendlyelec.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=69&product_id=282&sort=p.price&order=ASC
If you already have a virtualization host can just use a VM as well.
This is what I do though technically it’s a container on Proxmox. Otherwise I’d recommend one of the LibreComputer boards. The Le Potato one is solid and cheap though also over kill for just a PiHole.
A small container running in kubernetes on an old laptop.
Getting more life out of the old laptop… nice!

Wait, what’s wrong with the RPI 3b? It seems perfect for this.
RPI 3b is great but more than needed resource-wise (correct me if I’m wrong).
Its actually about right. You’re going to have problems with anything slower if you want gigabit speeds.
Thanks!
