I think that the main boundary is between deciding what you like versus what others should like.
The former is fine; even if someone like “ahneemay” because it’s trendy, or avoids fanservice or because the person got tired of [whatever they’re watching in USA nowadays, I seriously do not know] and wants something different.
The later however is not. It’s just someone being entitled, and expecting people to appease their personal tastes. It doesn’t make them just a shitty anime fan, it also makes them a shitty person, unable to deal with the fact that the world does not revolve around their belly button.
Just my two cents.
The most legitimate criticism is about controversial and possibly immoral/illegal aspects being normalized in society. Even that though is easy to remedy. Don’t let your kids watch them unsupervised. Otherwise, insisting on censorship/bans veers into “D&D is satanism” and “video games cause violence” territory.
Yeah in my parts pokemon was banned (schools and community) because it was Yokai. My buddy had to hide his pokemon cards, like you would dirty magazines.

but even known figures in anime like miyazaki, tomino, and hideaki anno criticized things like fan service

Oh that’s a excellent point. I’ve been told about people trying to edit out lgbt issues in anime too. A official example of this is how 4kids removed the relationship in Card Captor Sakura.

Broadly, for those coming into the thread, it was about the asshole translators and their asshole employers who insist on “localizing” literally everything, including culture-specific things like honorifics that cannot ever actually be “localized.”
And yes - eliminating lgbt issues is another problem. That one particularly irritates me because it’s an issue regarding which the Japanese, traditionalists though they might be, are very open and tolerant - there have been lgbt characters in anime and manga, entirely non-contoversially, for as long as the mediums have existed. Then along come the Americans, who get all twisted out of shape over it.
Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune is a pretty famous example of this as well. I haven’t watched the Crystal remake, but I understand that the lesbian relationship was preserved in that version.

I assume ‘tourist’ (in fandom spaces) got started in someplace just awful, but it’s a really nice word. I’ve always felt that being s casual fan of something was perfectly normal, so tourist is far more useful a word to use. I’m a casual fan of scifi and i wouldn’t go around making demands of the Aurora 4x devs/community or something, but a tourist would.
Minor complaints are fine but when they go and demand changes is where it gets irritating. It doesn’t just apply to anime but to other niche subculture like Warhammer, boardgames and itasha. I enjoy it when new people join the hobby but atleast spend some time to learn about it first before spewing all that garbage.
