Yeah, I generally stick to what the average American finds OK. Transformers is good. Pacific Rim is older but OK. I don’t go into Macross too deep unless I know they’re cool with it.

I don’t remember anything about dot hack except it sad so damn boring. I think it had a good premise and decent art but all the Mc did was nothing.
Since some of my favorites are already mentioned, Macross Plus. Great mecha, great voice acting, great music. Plot is a little weird.

Critic reviews are useless because they are largely just ads bought and paid for.
Also because they usually judge criteria differently. They watch a lot of movies and are looking for things the average person isn’t.
True. To me, it’s the popular perception of anime that’s the problem. Most people associate it with the op’s topics, even if that’s not everything. There’s some critical point where there’s enough weird stuff that it gets rounded up into “all anime is weird”.
I vote it’s anime.
