Hunter x Hunter is probably my favorite. It’s still technically ongoing, but the mangaka has serious health issues so the current arc hasn’t progressed much. The anime does close out on the best arc ever, so it’s a pretty satisfying stopping point. The 2011 anime, mind you. The 1999 one DRAGS ASS. Avoid it.

It’s not quite as compelling because in the original, Griffith was compelled by his lust for Gut’s guts to potato Casca so they could be alone, triggering the whole shebang. In this AU, Guts never left, Griffith never sacrificed (the outfit is actually just medieval bondage gear), and Casca got jealous and is trying to break up their (entirely consensual) gay sex marathon.

Sitting on a chair with a hammer suspended above your nutsack and having a friend cut the rope at a random time will provide the same effect and surprise with much less effort.

I think the show was already canceled in Japan, but the money for the dub was already spent, so they just let them do literally whatever they want as long as they kept the spirit names, the sealing method, and something else the same. Utterly free reign aside from that. It got to the point that whichever VA showed up earliest got to pick the direction the improv went that day.

It’s beautiful. It’s a crossover with one layer of abstraction from original material. You have to have seen bushworld adventures and at least be familiar with Eva to fully appreciate it which is why it’s a tier 3 at least.
