In my case, I don’t officially put stuff in my PTW, but unofficially, I was hoping to watch 86 someday but held off until a secret santa event recommended me to watch it. It’s still in progress. So far I think it’s a pretty great show.
Lots and lots of them…
Some that come to mind:
Mushishi - it just doesn’t hold my attention, which is actually sort of okay, since it’s episodic, but means that it lingers as TBW. I’m up to episode 5 ATM.
Tatami Galaxy - I generally love Yuasa, but I just keep bouncing off of this one. Mostly it’s that it’s an odd sort of “tell, don’t show” spin on storytelling, and the narration is not only so constant, but so fast, and it’s just sort of exhausting.
Haibane Renmei - It’s strange enough and slow-paced enough that I’m going to have to be in exactly the right mood to appreciate it.
The later seasons of DanMachi - When I first watched the series, there were three seasons out, but by the time I made it through season 2, I was exhausted. The villains are just so villainous and so immensely powerful and Bell is so earnest and slow to grasp the real nature of things that it was both suspenseful and frustrating, and I just couldn’t work up the initiative to dive into season 3. And I still haven’t, and have since fallen even further behind. But someday…
The later seasons of Re:Zero - the first time through, I made it most of the way through season 1, and just hated Subaru so much I had to walk away. Then I learned that that was a not uncommon reaction, and saw lots of claims that you just have to stick with it, so I went back and watched the rest of season 1, and ended up still hating Subaru. It’s not just that he’s so often weak - I can understand that. It’s that the only way he seems to be able to counter that weakness is to jump all the way over to being a self-absorbed asshole who doesn’t listen to anyone. There’s a middle ground there where he’d listen to people and take their advice and make considered decisions and carry through with them, but he skips right past that, so he basically alternates between being a weak and foolish asshole and being a self-absorbed and willful asshole. But I love the concept and most of the rest of the cast (and especially Emilia), and I can’t imagine that Subaru keeps failing to find that middle ground through so many successful seasons, so I keep wanting to give it another chance.
Dunno how far you got in Haibane Renmei, but that show really is fantastic. Very interesting world with lots of room to ponder what it all means.
Perfect description of DanMachi. Could never put into words why it got so exhausting to watch.
Already added 2 movies and 3 shows to my library off this thread! Thanks everyone for the inputs!

I have 87 animes in PTW list, it’s populated faster than I watch. Recently as I went through video explaining elves appearance and development in anime, I added a whole bunch of late 80s-90s stuff like Elf 17 and Record of Lodoss War. Something that was in the list for a while, but I never felt quite in the right mood for it yet is Aria the Animation.
I watched Aria the Animation back when I was having panic attacks. It’s too slow for me to find interesting when I’m feeling OK, but was just about right when my body was freaking out and I needed something calming to distract myself with.
Oh boy I have a lot but the one that stands out is Paprika. It’s the only Satoshi Kon film I haven’t seen. I don’t know when I’m ready to watch it yet.
The problem with Paprika is that you need the right mindset when watching it. It’s not something you can enjoy when you just put on something to kill the time. Of all the Satoshi Kon movies I’ve seen I would say it is the one that needs the most attention.
I dont think ill ever get around to them
My backlog is huge.
But one the oldest on my list is season 2 of automatic maiden. I’ve been worried about the direction of the story.
Over the years I have often seen or got Mushishi recommended but never started to watch it.
I also have hundreds of series that just “fizzled out” over the season where I had the best intentions to finish them another time. But just thinking about the backlog now gives me anxiety.
I can attest that Mushishi is quite good. Basically a chill supernatural mystery of the week situation. Not high in action
Mushishi is awesome and is one thing that I think you can recommend to any age group-- 5 years old or 105 years old.
I watched most of the first season of Mushishi, and ended up falling out of love with it. I’m not sure if it did ever end up going anywhere, but more than half way through there was still no cohesion or connection between episodes.
Like I said, I haven’t seen it but my understanding is that it’s a thing of the week without any connection. At least that’s the mindset I have when going in one of these days.
I just checked back through copies of stuff I physically have and somehow I never got around to watching Your Name or Perfect Blue in the last ~7 years I’ve had them.
The Evangelion rebuild movies have been untouched on my PTW for maybe 5 years now.
Keep them there. “3.0 + 1.0” or whatever the last one is called might be the worst thing I’ve forced myself to watch. Completely indecipherable, looks ridiculous, and lacks direction. They’re just weird movies overall. If you watch 1.0 it gives you the impression you’re watching a remake of the series, but each new entry deviates from the OG until it’s completely detached. I’m sure there’s some 4D chess going on to explain how it’s all tied in, but I don’t have 50 hours to spend on evageeks these days.
