I also didn’t plan on watching. I was warned off: don’t do it, you have kids. I’m so glad I did.
My only thought was that Mama is the great old one, and while Takopi surprised her by disobeying, her larger concern was that he was going to lose his memories. I’m wondering if this was him completing his original sentence, causing him to be reborn. More likely, you are right and he did merge with the essence of the universe, making the people he cared about happy, like in the OP-pi.
