Akane Evangelion’ed the crap out of “Jugemu”. Yes, that’s how it felt like. Masterful in-universe performance by Akane and also out-of-universe by her VA.

It’s a very simple story, but it bears repeating the basics of how it’s originally told.

    1. Dad wants to give his son an auspicious name because of infant mortality
    2. The priest suggested a large number of choices. The dad pretty much took the supercharged ‘¿por que no los dos todos?’ option.
    3. Hilarity ensues when everyone has to recite his full name.
    4. It was not so funny when Jugemu, etc. etc. died because he drowned.
    spoiler

Akane deconstructed the story structure and thoroughly explained the ‘why’ to the audience. In addition, also let herself disappear so they can fully immerse to the story.

The kicker was her plot twist that Jugemu knows how to swim and saved himself, keeping the story as close to the original while staying as a comedy.

I was just like the audience in this case.

As it stands, my rating of Akane-banashi is in the limbo between 9 and 10 out of 10. I just finished rewatching Akebi’s Sailor Uniform (highly recommend, it’s a masterpiece, particularly its final episode), so I have refreshed my baseline on what separates a 9 versus a 10. The next two episodes of this anime will be very important.

    The banner should be fitting:
