Continuation from the discussion of “what are your comfort anime?”
By that, I specifically mean, “what anime makes you anything but comfortable, but rewatch anyway?” It could be for various reasons, I imagine.
In my case, two of my three regularly-rewatched anime, I do so because of the catharsis (Violet Evergarden and Your Lie in April). The third is equal parts comfort and anti-comfort, so they cancel out (A Place Further Than The Universe). All are intense enough for me to only rewatch once a year.
While I’m not sure I understand the premise, the only thing I’ve ever had a ♠ romance with has been Attack on Titan. I hated that first season with a fiery passion even on my first watch, despite being absolutely captivated by the first episode. Like, I will give it props for having such a marvelous set-up that you immediately want to know where it all goes, but I was constantly enraged by almost every plot beat. It kills off characters you don’t know or care about and yells at you to feel something. The MC maybe goes through some struggles before it was revealed that no, he’s a genius and people were just bullying him. Then it has the gall to make him God’s specialist little boy. The only character I even liked was General Pixis, tho Armin has his moments.
I’ll refrain from talking about spoilers in subsequent seasons, but those also pissed me off. The main reason I haven’t actually finished hate-watching the entire show is because it took so damn long to come out, and quite frankly I needed my spoons and straws to survive the politics and plague of the last ten years. Funnily enough, all my friends save one are of the same mind that AoT sucks, but AFAIK it’s popular among the greater anime community.
Land of the Lustrous. Hear me out. I absolutely loved the anime. So much so that I was like “I need MOAR!” and then binged the manga. Without giving anything away, the complete story ruined me for several days afterwards. Don’t get me wrong, it was BRILLIANT but it was also like “fuck…” Like, have you ever seen Requiem for a Dream? Where you go “wow, that was fantastic… and I never want to watch it again.” Except I love Phos and would absolutely spend time with her again and then question my sanity afterwards.
In a similar vein, Planetarian. It gets you right in the feels but is also fantastic. It plays fair and you’re left going “yeah, there isn’t any other way they could have ended, is there?” while you’re bawling your eyes out.
That’s a tricky one for me. I’m tempted to give it to Parasyte, but I haven’t actually finished it yet, so idk
Neon Genesis Evangelion for me. Easily top 5 all time favorites, but definitely intense all the way through.
intense all the way through
I think I’ll just quote Shinji on this one “You ran out of ink, too, didn’t you, you bastards?”
I want to watch Attack on Titan. But I suspect it will not be comfortable for me. I never feel like watching crazy giants eating people.
And if it actually is more comfortable than the premise suggests I’m not sure I actually want to watch it.
But I guess until I actually watch it it will remain in a superposition.
That reminds me: I should revisit Akira and I should not revisit Perfect Blue. Used to watch both regularly as I only had so many VHS tapes back then.
Honestly I’m not sure I have any. Life is too short to rewatch something I’m not certain I’ll find immensely enjoyable.
Revolutionary Girl Utena, I think? I don’t rewatch that often, but when people start talking about it, I’ll rewatch some episodes.
