I haven’t played the game, so I don’t know how well it adapts the source material, and I’m writing this as an anime-only. In my opinion, this was an abysmal premiere. The direction was very bland – they tried to insert some action scenes that suffer from “GoHands syndrome of flying camera” (even though this is not being handled by GoHands), but that couldn’t distract me from the bad writing. Yeah, because the writing here is not good either. It succeeds at conveying what the plot is about, but that’s the only positive thing I can say about it. Everything falls into place too conveniently; it shows us going from plot point A to plot point B, but it does nothing exciting with that. On top of that, the dialogues are bad too. We get to know almost every character by watching them introduce themselves – “Hello, my name is… blah blah… I do this and that, remember me viewer for future reference, mkay?” It’s paradocumentary level of writing; fanfic quality. As for the positives… I guess the animation wasn’t bad, but it’s nothing to be excited about either. I’ll watch one more episode, just to be sure, but as of now I think I’m gonna drop this.

This follows Suikoden 2 and the main selling point is how the story puts pressure on the protagonists. I’m curious to see how well they will pull this off in the anime, but so far I’m not convinced that they will do a good job of this. the main feature of the game are the side characters, and I fear they will just throw in as many cameo appearances as they can, whether it makes sense or not (like the mini carnival troupe). I will also say that the villain Luca wroked in the game (for that area) but in the anime he just looks like a caricature. After the pilot I would say you’re better off playing the game (there’s a remaster) than watching the show, but I hope the next episodes will be better.

I played through about 80% of the 3rd one when I was a teenager, still gonna try and jump into this.

A similar game, if you had a PS2, was Radiata Stories, which I think would translate to an anime better since there’s no prequel/sequel.
