Bought from goHardDrive. I’ve already had a drive fail and require replacement, and that was with pretty much no use. It just failed on a smart test. The same drive, maybe, has already failed again. I’m going to nag em because of the warranty, but it’s pretty worrying. Like, I’m sure failing a scrub isn’t the end of the world, but it’s also not a good thing, right?

Go Hard Drive is especially bad. They take drives that already failed but currently pass tests, then clear SMART data.
I had a 133% failure rate (all 3 drives, plus the first replacement before I sent it all back). Their customer service at least is good. I had no problems getting refunded.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a used drive from random eBay sellers fail, and never prematurely.
All 6 of my 12TB hdds are refurbs. Had one start to fail, bought another refurb, swapped it out, and that one was showing failures. After some debugging I figured out it was the cable that died.
If you do buy refurbished drives, ideally get manufacturer refurbished ones that come with a manufacturer warranty. If you’re in the USA, ServerPartDeals is a great store for it.
Manufacturer refurbished drives tend to be pretty reliable because they’ve been tested to meet the manufacturer’s specs, usually including a deep stress test, and come with a warranty from the manufacturer.
The thing that sucks at the moment is that refurbished drives cost more than the new ones used to cost.
Two of mine are coming up on 11 years of hours. I’ve had them maybe 3 years.
Also, they’re 6tb drives, so I bet they were pretty expensive when new.
3 refurbished drives here (12, 18, 26TB), between 1 and 3 years old, no redundancy, no specific healthcheck but also no reported problem so far, even though I misshandled some of them in the beginning.
I have a rather large array of refurbished 14TB WD HC530 drives and most are still going strong. Ive lost a couple over the last 3-4 years, but the vast majority are still going strong.
Since these are from goHardDrive, I’m guessing they’re most likely Seagate or the white label Seagates (I think they’re called MD drives)? I have had terrible experience with Seagate, even when new. I pretty much exclusively buy WD or Toshiba because of that.
All of that being said, have you checked your cables? Uncorrectable errors can sometimes be caused by bad cables, or they can be caused by actual disk issues.
I mostly avoided seagate, but may have bought one for storage diversity. I’ll have to check if it’s Seagate in the morning.
Going on 2 years now with all 12 I have currently in my PowerEdge. I run parity and health checks monthly, and still seem to be going strong.
EDIT: 12x Seagate Exos X14 14TB SAS drives purportedly refurbed by Seagate themselves. I think that’s the key though, getting them factory refurbished.
