I am really appreciating the vibe of this show. This shows a vibrant ecosystem within each layer of the dungeon, coupled with a variety of problems that can be solved in a multitude of ways.
I wouldn’t have expected that the mandrake could be harvested and eaten by just cutting off their heads. I also didn’t expect that they would show the screamed-out one to be superior.
One point they are making is the strength of the main characters. At the beginning you see that they are initially holding their own against a large dragon, before they fail. Now the party’s strength seems to be compared against adventurers at each stage. So far, the party has had the occasional mistake, but hasn’t faced anything significantly challenging. It will be interesting to see what the party’s limits are and how they overcome them.
They all have flaws, despite being pretty high level adventurers. They deal with death fairly casually, Senshi has been around living off the dungeon for a decade… And any more would be spoilers.
It only gets better. Getting to know these characters (and several others that we will meet) is one of my favorite aspects of the manga. In this episode we saw Marcys vulnerable and naive side for the first time, and you can be sure there’s more to Laios and Chilchuck, as well.

I’m having fun with the small details in this episode:
- Comparing Marcille’s mum in the dream with adult Marcille, in a certain key detail. When you know it, you see it.
- Basilisk eggs being like snake eggs, because the main part of the body is the snake.
- Laios confronting the basilisk. I mean, sometimes I chat with my cats, but that’s on another level!
- Marcille showing full force that she’s book smart, although not too practical. And she inadvertently discovers something!
- The darker yolk. Free range basilisk, after all! She probably ate quite a bit of enriching foods in the dungeon: diverse grains, insects, random fruits, adventurer corpses…
- Senshi measuring deep-frying oil temperature with his thumb. My grandma did this, it creeped me out.
I felt that scene where Senshi measured the temperature with his thumb. My mom used to do the same thing all the time. She worked professionally in a kitchen, and I swear her hands must have been immune to heat.
Could we consolidate episode discussions over on !dungeonmeshi@ani.social?
I will be posting them every week (@wjs018@ani.social you’re of course welcome to do so as well, but I will still have to pin them if you do). I will also be posting other content in order to drive discovery of the community, between episodes, and to maybe encourage more lemmings to pick up the show.
I also like to delay actually posting episode discussion by a good few hours, as this “spends” the visibility spike that new posts get at a later time in the day, when people have actually had a chance to see the episode. This worked wonderfully with ep1 and a lot of comments and upvotes were netted.
I’m of course biased, but I’m kinda taking the series under my wing so to speak and would super appreciate any co-operation on pulling the fandom together on lemmy.
That is fine with me. I don’t want to nuke this thread that already has discussion, but glad to let you lead the threads for this series going forward. Of course, I can’t stop shinobu from posting them when she wakes up from her winter hibernation.
edit: added link to post contents
I wouldn’t ask, I noticed you edited in a link to the thread I just made but aside from that I don’t think anything else is warranted this week.
My personal opinion is that episode discussions should be in the same place (preferably !episode_discussion though I understand shinobu is down right now), so they can be discovered by non-core fan of series.
Perhaps if there is some way to add a function to shinobu to include a custom blob for each show it can link to a local fan community of a show in its posts if one exists. Failing that, perhaps a thread here each season linking the season’s show to local communities would be good for discovery.
Sorry for the long post, but this has been on my mind a lot lately as the community has had some time without shinobu and I have gotten to see how people/this community have adjusted.
Changing the front matter of the posts is something that @chaorace@lemmy.sdf.org and I have talked about in the past; making the links in the post body more relevant, or slimming down the bulk of the post body to what is most commonly used. If nothing else, this shinobu outage has reinforced my opinion that having an automated thread generation process and collecting all the threads in one place is ultimately better than users creating wildcat threads ad hoc. Things like timing/formatting/searchability just aren’t consistent that way.
I also think this has been a nice experiment to see how people react to having episode discussion threads colocated alongside news/general threads or whether they are better kept separate to the episode_discussion community. I personally think that with the volume of news/general posts to this community, adding all the discussion threads would pretty much push everything else off the page. I know that is how reddit and the ml community ran, but I think having them separate works better for a small community like this one. If the community keeps growing, then it might be worth reopening the discussion.
Finally, my utopian vision for how this might work in the future, is that we keep episode discussion posts in a separate community posted by an automated process, but at the same time, have a pinned post in the main community that collects links to all the episode discussions posted by the bot that week (ideally kept up to date by the bot itself when a new post is made). This keeps the deluge of episode discussion posts off the main community, but makes it relatively easy to find a show’s discussion thread in the other community even if it is buried by newer discussion posts.
Edit: For now, the best I can offer is the thread linked in the sidebar maintained by @MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz that collects relevant communities. Though they haven’t added their own !dungeonmeshi@ani.social community yet!
Nah man. The point of feddy is freedom. You can post wherever whenever you want. Don’t like it can jolly well go somewhere else.
Nah, I see the point here. Our community is still small, so fragmenting discussion just means there is less of it. That being said, I won’t delete threads that people want to make about this show in this community going forward (while shinobu is still on her vision quest). Not everybody wants to subscribe to a community dedicated to a single seasonal show.
Not everybody wants to subscribe to a community dedicated to a single seasonal show.
I know I actively avoid those communities for works based on a manga, because they often have spoilers show up by way of fanart/etc/. It’s just not a suitable place for general discussion of a currently airing anime.
It’s not like I demanded OP delete this thread, I simply asked a fellow mod to work together with me in maintaining discussion threads for a series we both enjoy, rather than split our efforts.
By all means, post whatever wherever… but take that too far and we’d all be posting in our own communities with single digit subscribers, few actual interactions ever occurring.
I really liked Marcille’s dream to open the episode. During the opening parts of the episode, dealing with the basilisk and mandrakes, I was worried that Marcille was going to end up as nothing more than a comedy relief character. However, I was super happy to see that the writer might have peeked into my brain and directly addressed that through Marcille having a mandrake-influenced truth serum moment, admitting to her insecurities. We still haven’t gotten a chance to see her shine, but I am glad they at least addressed this. It gives me more hope that there will be some moment in the future that was made for her to kick ass.
You better believe it. This story has some of my favorite characterization in… anything. Marcille did end up my favorite, and not just because she’s an absolute cinnamon roll.
Laios also shows off his wisdom and sensitivity as party leader. When Chilchuck is about to fly off the handle, he leads by example and pulls his party back together with a few reassuring words.
I’m really glad this seems to be getting a good adaptation, the characters are so expressive and Marcille just can’t get a break 😅
I really liked the episode. It had made my food even tastier. Yesterday I have made a joke that in the future we will eat protein paste made from insects while watching pretty food on screen.
Some character building and developement that was nice to see. I really like the theme of trying new things in unorthodox style.
