So about 80% Girls’ Last Tour, 20% Heavenly Delusion for the first episode. Or something like that.
It’s hard to tell how long is supposed to have passed since the end of civilization in that world. On the one hand, the fact that relatively delicate auxiliary structures like traffic signals are still standing and signage is still legible despite exposure to the weather suggests a gap measured in decades, not centuries (much less Dr. Stone). On the gripping hand, they had a large tree growing out of the center of a building, and I’m pretty sure Hakodate isn’t in the more tropical parts of Japan where trees continue growing year-round. On the third hand, the diner could have been abandoned before the end. On the fourth hand, the original mangaka may not have done the research necessary to realistically depict elapsed time. 🤷
If I had to make a wild-assed guess about the intended timeline, I’d say 20-50 years since whatever-it-was happened. Not terribly long, in other words.
This was a pretty good premier! It definitely made me want to keep watching. Lots of questions coming up as well as some nice crumbling world shots. I’m hoping that the relationship between the two leads is able to be fulfilling for this show, because I think that could make this one of the better shows this season.
I like that there is no outright explanation for the apocalypse and they sprinkled some mystery breadcrumbs. So far I have:
- Mt. Fuji erupted
- rogue military AI
- talk of radiation
The timeframe is also a mystery for me. Depending on whether MC has “visions” or “memories”, it’s unlikely that the decay has progressed so far in what little time has passed based on her age. Now, if it’s not memories but visions of the past it’s a different story. But in that case she might just as well be in the distant future. At least that would explain why there is so much decay and why she has an android sidekick. The only question in that case would be where and how the sister from the pictures fits in. But maybe she and the sister are androids as well, with the sister being one early models from before the apocalypse and MC being a 200 years later model developed in the shelters. Maybe how nice she was to the rogue AI in the tank was a hint for this “twist”.
I’m intrigued to find out.
Agreed. I think that the answer to those questions could be used in a very interesting way. Narratively, I can think of so many things they could do with it. I wonder if we’ll get the answers sooner, or if they will wait to drop it on us in a reveal at the end.
She mentioned sweating and stuff, and she doesn’t seem robotic like the other girl. I think she’s human.
Just based on the description from AniList, I was not expecting the plasma rifle to suddenly pop out of her arm. I am interested to see more as we go sightseeing through this world.
