Psycho Pass is good though it’s not SUPER dark. Very dystopian though. Good show.
Serial Experiments Lain.
I was rewatching a couple of episodes and I had forgotten how eerie and creepy this one was.
Since nobody mentioned it yet: The Promised Neverland
It started with a very strong hook, had a middle section full of suspense, and ended the best way I could hope for.
Madoka.
Even after all these years and rewatches, it can still draw me in. And Magia still sends chills up my spine.
Takopi’s Original Sin
On the one hand, it’s incredibly well-made. On the other hand I’m not sure I ever want to watch that ever again.
That’s how I feel about Grave of the Fireflies. I’ve only seen the first episode or two of Tokopi, but my spouse and I knew we had to put it down at the time. Maybe someday.
Wierd pick, but Dorohedoro.
The world and main plot are undeniably dark. But at the same time side threads and charachters have a juxtaposed wholesome and positive outlook, and tonally things work like a slice of life a lot of the time.
It’s great.
Followed up by Dai Dark by the same author
- Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
- Vivy
- God Eater
- Gunslinger Girls
- Noir
- Area 88
- Ergo Proxy
- NieR:Automata Ver1.1a
Area 88 was a gut-punch I wasn’t expecting. So bleak.
The original even more than the reboot
- Made in Abyss
- Shibou Yuugi de Meshi wo Kuu
- Needy Girl Overdose
Now and Then, Here and There
Orb: On the Movements of the Earth - half of the episodes are so fucking dark that you literally can’t see shit
Mirai Nikki Elfen Lied Psycho pass
Top three because I couldn’t pick a favourite from them if I tried.
Mirai Nikki, Elfen Lied, Psycho pass. In case anyone needed commas.
Those were supposed to be on new lines. Will teach me not to supervise my own comments.
