A few months ago @moistbones@lemmy.world regularly posted cucumber shitposts, usually some kind of pun with an image of uncomfortably detailed pickles. Today, I noticed food additive E412, made from guar beans, is often called “guar seed flour” in German (Guar-kern-mehl). This sounds a lot like like “cucumber-flour” (Gurken-mehl), so I edited an image to show what that may look like.

Sorry to say, reality is disappointing, as E412 just looks like any gray powder and has nothing to do with cucumbers.

It’s a pun that only works in German. Guaran, is a food additive made from guar beans. In Germany we call it Guarkernmehl (guar pit flour) which sounds like Gurkenmehl which would mean gherkin flour.

This meme is about the common misinterpretation of “Guarkernmehl” (Guar seed powder aka guaran) as “Gurkenmehl” (cucumber/pickle powder)
